I've used Vanguard and found their site to be using more security measures sooner than some other big brokerage sites I use.
Their system has a sort of computer recognition, so if you were to use another computer, the site seems to be aware of that. They also use security questions and an icon that you choose to make you more aware and certain that you are on the valid site.
I can't say that I know a lot about the security of using wireless internet though.

I routinely just the internet sites of my mutual fund companies and brokerage companies to transfer money back and forth. I have not had a problem. But having said that keep in mind that if you were to have a worm on your computer that was capable of capturing and interpreting your key strokes, you could have a problem.

Financial sites such a Vanguard take every precaution to safeguard your data. Their livelyhood depends on it.

My wife works for the company, and you would be amazed at the hoops (security wise) they make account holders go through when calling for info on their accounts. That said, nothing is 100% safe, mail can get lost etc. I personally don't have a problem with reputable companies doing business online.

In general it is safe to do this online. You might possibly have a problem if you have a key-logging virus on your computer. If you don't want to do it online, you can download forms from their website, and mail them in.
